Boss 429 originated in Ford’s NASCAR programme. Its huge heads with near-hemispherical combustion chambers required substantial changes to the Mustang engine bay.
The production version was rated at 375 hp SAE gross. This was not the specification or output of a purpose-built NASCAR engine, nor was it the same as an ordinary 429 Cobra Jet.
Kar Kraft modified the Mustang bodies to accommodate the engine. Its engineering and limited build made Boss 429 one of the most collectible classic Mustangs.
