The original Boss 302 was conceived around Ford’s Trans-Am ambitions. Its 302-cubic-inch road engine paired a compact Windsor-derived block with distinctive large-port cylinder heads.
The 290 hp SAE gross production rating should not be mistaken for the output of purpose-built Trans-Am race engines, which were extensively modified.
Ford’s 1970 Trans-Am championship cemented the Boss reputation. The 2012–2013 Boss 302 deliberately revived the name with a fundamentally different V8.
