Ford developed the extraordinary 427 SOHC Cammer as a response to Chrysler’s 426 Hemi and the escalating NASCAR engine war. It used an FE-derived block with overhead cams in both cylinder heads.
A long timing chain drove the cams. Period output claims around 616–657 hp depended on induction setup and should not be equated with modern SAE net horsepower.
The Cammer never became a regular production-car option. Ford nevertheless supplied engines for competition, where they became famous in drag racing.
