The 289 High Performance, often called HiPo or K-code, was the high-revving Windsor small-block that helped define the early Mustang. It was also a foundation for Carroll Shelby’s 1965 GT350.
Mechanical lifters, a hotter camshaft and strengthened components supported its performance. Ford rated the Mustang version at 271 hp using the contemporary SAE gross standard.
Original K-code Mustangs and early Shelby GT350s are prized today, but the Shelby engine and a standard HiPo should not be treated as mechanically identical.
