History and significance
RPO ZL1 is among the rarest factory production options in Corvette history. Available in 1969, it brought a 427-cubic-inch all-aluminium V8 derived from the competition-focused L88 programme. Aluminium block construction substantially reduced the weight compared with an iron-block big-block.
Chevrolet quoted 430 hp in period SAE gross terms. That factory figure should not be treated as a direct modern SAE net rating. High compression, specialist fuel requirements and a formidable option price made the ZL1 a highly unusual road-car purchase.
Only two production 1969 Corvettes with RPO ZL1 are factory-documented: one coupe and one convertible. Development mules and ordinary iron-block L88 Corvettes are not included in that number. Authenticity depends on documentary evidence rather than appearances alone.
The Monaco Orange ZL1 convertible, chassis 194679S710209, sold at RM Sotheby’s Arizona on January 26, 2023, for $3,140,000 USD. This is a dated auction result, not a current valuation.
The image is a representative 1969 Corvette C3 Roadster with a 427 V8; it is not verified as one of the two ZL1 examples.
Why so few?
The production figure applies to: two factory-documented 1969 Corvettes with RPO ZL1, one convertible and one coupe; experimental test vehicles are excluded.
