HISTORY & TECHNOLOGY

From race car to road car

Mustang GTD was developed as an exclusive road-legal Mustang closely inspired by GT3 racing. Carbon fibre, a rear transaxle and advanced aerodynamics aim for balance, downforce and circuit performance far beyond a regular Mustang GT or Dark Horse.

815 SAE horsepower

Ford rates the standard GTD at 815 SAE horsepower—about 826 metric PS. The supercharged 5.2-litre V8 develops approximately 900 Nm and enables an announced 325 km/h top speed. SAE horsepower and metric PS are different units and should not be confused.

Nürburgring and GTD Competition

In April 2026, Ford announced a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 6:40.835 for the more track-focused GTD Competition, driven by Dirk Müller. This was not a standard GTD test; Ford places the result in the pre-production/prototype classification, an important distinction in comparisons.

Why it is not a GT3

Despite shared engineering philosophy, the engines differ: GT3 uses a 5.4-litre naturally aspirated V8 while GTD uses a supercharged 5.2-litre. GTD is also designed to satisfy road-vehicle requirements for lighting, emissions, safety and usability. The cars have different purposes.
