Roots of modern Mustang GT racing
Ford Racing and Multimatic developed Boss 302R for the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge in 2010. Based on S197, it received dedicated racing hardware and safety equipment. The 302R is distinct from the road-going 2012–2013 Boss 302.
Competition heritage
Following early development work, the car grew competitive in Grand-Am. A Boss 302R driven by Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson won the Continental Tire series race at Daytona in January 2012. This was not the Rolex 24 at Daytona itself.
Relationship to the road Boss
The Road Runner engine and chassis tuning of the street-legal Boss 302 express a related philosophy: Mustang as a car capable of serious track use. But 302R’s race specifications should not be confused with the road model’s features.
